View Full Version : Need to tone it down... :(

I'm in a good news/bad news situation here. Good news: I'm selling my Mustang GT. Bad news: The Z is going to be the DD now and is just simply too loud... don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's just not practical. My plan is having a cutout installed for any type of performance purpose, so she won't be completely tamed. But as far as everything from the cutout back, I need some advice. I have the Loudmouth so obviously, it doesn't really have a "muffler", but I will need to install a cat of some type, and I'm looking for a way to quiet it down fairly significantly without replacing the whole catback. Any ideas or advice is welcome to quiet it down and pass emissions, and if anyone has any videos or soundclips of a similar setup, please post them.
Thanks a lot

UPDATE: Most likely going to install the cutout right after the y-pipe, followed by whatever type of cat I need to pass emissions (even if it's pretty restrictive). Then I'll have to see what it sounds like and possibly install a quieter muffler in place of the resonator. Hopefully I can make it work, any other suggestions are still welcome, or cat/muffler recommendations as well.

I dont know how strict your emissions are where you live but 95+ cars had two cats, and they may want you to have the two in the y pipe, but if not i would go with a magnaflow cat after the cutout and replace the resonator with a borla xr1. That should tone it down some but not a lot.

Mine had only one cat with the factory flowmasters. I might actually try another flowmaster muffler if I can, to hopefully get it as quiet as possible, unfortunately VERY restricted at the same time, but hey, that's what the cutout is for.

Hmm, learned something new, i thought after 94 they switched to two cats but it may have been in 96. But ive got a flowmaster on the camaro and it does sound good. I love how the old school flowmasters sound especially my 1 chambers.:hail:

Don't forget, mine is a 383 stroker with no emissions, basically straight pipes with the loudmouth. It's VERY loud, I posted a video in the tech section, but that doesn't really do it justice.

I think your half right, I think in 95 they began changing things and some 95's have 1 cat, others have 2. But I agree, the flowmasters don't sound bad at all, they just get a bad rep for the lack of power I guess.

You could trade your LM1 for my Magnaflow :) I'm looking for something a bit louder, my Magnaflow is a little quiet for my taste.

The only 95 Z's to have the dual cat set up were A4 cars sold in California, M6 CA cars had the single cat along with all other states both A4 and M6.
Found this out when I bought my 95 which was a California A4 OBD1 car.

Hooker and a cutout. i'm running longtubes, offroad y, and a hooker cat back with a cutout. the hooker is really quiet inside the car and sounds so clean, but the cutout is great to have to kill babies :shiner:

just adding a cat may make you happy, i would do that first before adding/changing anything else....
