Ok so I am building a 383 for my car. its a 1994 vert. my question is how much can the stock heads handle for power and the stock intake?
it will have forged internals and a 10:1 compression most likely.

I would also like to know the answer to this question.
I'll be cam only/Vortech V2 on 12psi.
Don't mean to hijack, we're just in the same boat here!

nice to know im not the only one. see the whole reason I don't want to swap or port heads and intake is they are so expensive and want to max them out before I swap. I just can't afford it right now.
btw sounds like you are gonna have a sweet setup.

Stock heads cant handle much without being ported. Most guys max out their heads with a small cam only such as the cc503. If you get your heads ported though you will see over 400 to the rear wheels easily if set up right.
Most ive personally seen with stock heads na was around 360 with a big cam.
Im not to sure though with a blower though.

Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was hoping for over 400 stock....:( I guess I will have to get my heads ported...what does it usually cost to port the stock heads? not to much right? how much can the stock intake take?
also if I port them how much can they take ported? up to 500rwhp? that is my goal or very close!

The heads are the weak point on a stock lt1. Check either of these guys out, they both do great work. Dont let the local jim bob port your heads b/c i seen guys with dirt cars port their own heads and go slower.

on those sites I didn't see anything about stock ported heads just aftermarket ones. Am I missing it?

You CAN run stock heads if you want to, it will work. It's just not optimal.
It seems silly to spend money on a stroker build, only to choke it with stock heads.
At least have them ported and install a nice cam that fits your application.

Both of those vendors port stock castings (or aftermarket if you want them)

The le1, le2 and le3 are different levels of stock ported heads on elliotsportworks.

The stock heads when ported will start to fall off at about 550 HP. The intake can take as much as you can throw at it (it's already a good design) but the more HP you make, the more it will hold you back without porting.
I got my LE2 heads used with 1k miles on them for $1100.

Heads make the power in all cars not matter LT1 or LS1 or SBC....you can use your stock heads and be fine but I would either do bottom end and then save for the best heads you can afford. I think with stock heads you would be somewhere around the mid-lower 300 with stock heads.
My 355 with stage 2 heads/cam made 390rwhp. Maybe look at spending less on the shortblock and add in some heads/cam

Don't expect much more than 360-380 rwhp NA through stock heads.
Yeah nothing wrong with bolting the stock heads on for awhile. Like you said, just to get by for awhile. BTW, i made WELL over 500whp with stock unported heads on a 355 @15psi. One big thing to do is port match the intake while its off, should only take an hour and pick you up a little power anyway. Its more fun to have a quick car that you can drive than a really fast one sitting in the garage with no heads on it.

That's all I need to hear.
I'm not going to go through the money/effort to port the heads when 475-500WHP is my goal anyways. I thought that level would be attainable on 12psi with a cammed 383 through stock heads, a 6 speed, and 10 bolt still.
Thanks for the insight!

I don't think stock heads would be choking a 383 with a small cam.it will definately be a TQ monster, forced induction is exactly that "FORCED induction "i will not deny that portwork will definately enhance performance cause it does!
Personally, if it was my build i would build the shortblock w/the addition of a blower in mind, get the heads fully ported, stainless valves,7/16 studs etc. then if there is money left purchase the blower, injectors, tune etc....
