View Full Version : Best springs to run on stock shocks?

I'm interested in lowering my 93z but am not sure which springs to look into. I would prefer to run my stock shocks (due to cost). From those with experience, which springs tend to perform the best when paired with stock shocks? Ive also been wondering if lowering will cause major wheel fitment issues with rubbing etc.. I would like to go for around a 2" drop in the front once the springs have completely settled and around 1.5" in the rear. The wheels I have are stock y2k Vette wheels with 245's front and 275's rear and I'm going to need c5 studs to run them already (I've just got one of those unlucky cars they don't fit on...fml). Anyway, any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

maybe you should buy the parts one at a time and get some shocks and springs, might be best since your stock shocks are 17 yrs old, dont forget youll need an alignment to

i believe the previous owner put new shocks on the car at some point because the odometer reads almost 175k miles and the car sure doesn't ride like the shocks/ springs have that many miles on them... the car has a different motor and many other new parts so its a good possibility. I've read multiple threads highly encouraging people to swap shocks and springs, do lowering springs on stock shocks really perform that horribly on these cars?

pretty much, also just speaking for myself its not a job you wanna do more than once,,my 97 had 50k on it when i changed my springs and shocks and i had to cut both shocks loose from the upper mount due to the water sitting on top of upper mount causing the bolt and nut to rust out pretty bad, so even if i hadnt planned to change shocks i had to change shocks,,i hear the upper mount issue is common so something to be ready for

What are the issues with running lowering springs on stock shocks in the opinions of those who have the set up?

thanks,

The stock shocks are not enough damping force for the stock springs, even when new. Adding a lower, and more firm spring will only overpower the dampers even more so.

Personally, I would just save your money for a while, and get a better matched set of shocks and springs. Most say Strano and Koni's, but there are more options. Some run the BMR's and KYB AGX's with decent results.

I would either go with strano or bmr springs. The ride will be harsh with lowering springs/stock shocks. I would save up and do both at the same time.

If i decide to lower only the front of the car would there be as much of a ride issue? Say I just added lowering springs to the stock front shocks and then left the back untouched.

what would you gain from this?ride is gonna suck anyway so at least have it looking good,, takes 2 minutes to change the back springs so if you insist on running the stockers in the front then prob should go ahead and do the same in the back

id wait for shocks, but thats just my .02,,maybe santa will bring you some shocks??

No offense taken guys, none at all. Thanks for the input. I'm gona try to find some springs and try it out. If I don't like it it's not that big of a deal.

Bilstein SLP's are pretty cheap and seem to work pretty well (especially for the price) on mildly lowered cars.

did you ever lower the car? i had lowered mine and still have the stock shocks, the ride is a lot stiffer but i dont mind it because its a night and day on the handling. i also had put sub frame connecters too. the springs i used were eibock.

If i could do it over id save up and get the QA1 set up, the front shocks are adjustable so you can adjust the height of the front to exactly where you would like it. pluse the benifits of the QA1s at the track is nice.
