View Full Version : What cam are you running?

I'm curious to see what cam everyone is running in their cars and just their thoughts about it. If you have dyno graphs/numbers and track times, please post them up too.

I'm lookin into swapping one into my Formula possibly over the winter, and just want to hear a few opinions on them from the owners. My Formula will be my Daily Driver, and I want mine to be "streetable".

Post up what you got!

Figure out your definition of streetable. Do you want a broad powerband with a lot of grunt, or do you want a top end powerband that makes good upper power?

My recommendation for a GOOD street friendly car would be the CC502. That should put you right about 340-345 RWHP and TQ with supporting bolt on's.

I run the LT4 hot cam kit in the trans am and that thing has some get up and very steetable.. I ran the CC305 and really didn't mind it to much had a little less than the LT4 cam.. Now i run the CC306 and this thing pulls good top end and i'm still not tuned.. If i had to go with one again i would choose the LT4 hot cam kit cause it's really not that expensive and very easy to put in, you don't have to order all the parts from different people..

cc306 stock heads/bottom end

DD the car and go back and forth from FL to NY
25-27 HWY mpg on a rich tune
10-15 city

but I have a 6spd and 2.73 gears so I have some cam surge below 2000rpms in gears 1-3 (much worse in 1 and 2), 4 it isnt too bad, 5 and 6 I cant feel it

I think I have decided on the Crane 227 for a smog legal, low end setup.

Ran an Bret Bauer custom LE1HL cam (mid 22x/low 23x) on a tight LSA in my 350.
Very streetable, kept peak in around 6200rpm, which is good for the stock bottom end.
Dyno through a 4000 stall : http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e146/jmontign/93%20Firehawk/Dyno%20and%20Slips/Dyno02207001c-1.jpg

I'll be running another of his custom cams in my 383, it's much more aggressive
(mid 230s / high 240s) on an obscene tight LSA. Should still be streetable with a
383's displacement, but will require some effort to get the idle right.

If you're looking for somewhere to start, the CC503 (224/230 on a 112LSA) is my
favorite off-the-shelf grind for a 350 LT1. It would have a similar shaped curve to what my LE1HL produced.

Just noticed you are in CA, the 227 is probably your best bet off the shelf.

No track times yet, but I run the CC503. (224/230 on 112 LSA) I have heard nothing but good things about this cam on the street, but all I can say for sure is it sounds awesome!

I also run LT4 cam and like how it's runs and idles. Now that I moved away from smog lovin california, I plan to upgrade to a CC503 and long tubes.

LPE211/219, drives exactly like stock just ALOT more torque and a little longer powerband.
Very fun street cam.

I think the stock LT1 is:
205/207 117lsa, .447/.459 (1.5 rocker), valves are 1.94"/1.5"
RWHP - 270~300 (completely stock, I was guessing)

Mine is:
speedpro cs1065r (It was a prepackaged longblock)
209/214 112lsa, .502/.523 (1.6rr), valves 2.02"/1.6"
I have alot of other bolt-ons and it is a 355... 316rwhp/354rwtq - drives like stock. I have some issues though, and not tuned to well. I will probably sqeeze some more out of this eventually when I have more time/money to put in it.

I also have a LT4 hot cam with 1.6 RR and I think it sounds pretty good. I will be upgrading with the next motor i build though.

Does this cam have a stock sounding idle? My firebird doesnt have a stock cam according to my mechanic and im interested in knowing what it is. All i know is ive pulled cars on the road that i shouldnt have and it pulls up to 6000.

I had an LT4 Hot cam in my old car. Great DD cam if your looking for a mild set up.
New cam I have not installed yet, is a 230/236 .565/.568 108 Custom LE2 bullet racing cam.
Should sound great and be a great street cam according to LE

I agree with Fastbird. I have the CC502 in my car and love it, great street cam with tons of low end power. I made 390tq @ 3400rpm and 340hp @ 5500rpm. The specs with stock rockers are 218/224 duration and 498/503 lift, but i have 1.6 rockers which made it just a bit bigger than the hot cam. My cars been 12.8 at 108 spinning, i know it has alot more left in it and has made a 1.7 60 foot.

Well anything over 850-900 rpms it will sound stock. I have the idle at 800 and you can hear a little lope, just enough to tell there is a cam in there.

I had a bigger cam before but had a hard time passing emission so I swapped it for this baby

Im runnin a comp custom 230/236 .545 .555 w/ 1.6 rockers 114lsa. It sounds awsome, runs great. Have not got any times yet, waiting to upgrade the 10bolt before I take her to the track. I haved raced a few modded ls1's though. The latest was a ls1 gto, a4, custom cam, stall, longtube headers, with dual exhaust, tuned by glm. We raced 3 times. The first race I launched him he let out i was ahead a good bit. The second run I bogged severely on the launch, he got out about 1 1/2 cars. I made it up and passed him around 85-90. Had prolly 3-4 cars on him to 120. The third run was a roll from 15 to 120 i had him by a good amount could not really tell. Last summer I raced a f1 procharged, ls1 gto, m6, cam, lt headers, exhaust. The gto was only runnin 6-7psi because of pushing the limits on the stock bottom end. On epp's mustang dyno he put down 490whp. We raced from 20-140 a few times. He got me by 1-2 cars everytime. I think I need gears because I would pull him down low, he would then come around me in the bottom of my 3rd gear. Then I would stopped his pull in 4th everytime. Im still runnin the stock 3.42's lol.

ive sprayed around about 20 bottles through it, hit the box a few times on spray, a few backfires from a faulty WOT switch, car had a TH350 swap for a while with 4.10s, driving back and forth 11 miles @ 60 mph lol... its been reamed out.... HARD...

Yep, Hotcam here... The little sucker surprised me, pulls hard for a baby/mid range cam. Cant wait to feel the evil LE 2.5 or GM 847 with some LE2s under my right foot :D

I went from running the lt4 hotcam for 2 years to recently upgrading to the LE1.6 cam. It's close to the LE2 cam but it doesn't rev as high so i can keep the car on the street.

Fixxer99TA
10-21-2008, 11:02 PM
Yeah that would be a good idea too, I dont really have a problem with revving it though... Will be something I will have to discuss with LE if me grinds me a cam, I think 7k is about my limit...

I might want it to stay in the 6500-6800 range though just for safetys sake, but who knows where my mind will be around Feb :D

Adam

Here is what lloyd told me:

LE1.6 cam will have .573/.568 with a 1.6 rocker and a LSA below 110. It still operates from 2000-6300 RPM but has a choppier idle than a CC 503 and will make more mid range TQ and more top end power also.

Nice, theres a real good choice for even a DD. Still wayyyy within what you want to be with the stock bottom end. But your still getting that nasty power Lloyds custom grinds are known for :D

I miss the power from my LE1.2 cam.. But I love the low end torque from the LPE cam :D

I just finished up the install of my LE emissions cam. Close to a CC503 with a little less duration on the intake and more lift, 112 LSA. Running it with LE2 heads. Sounds awesome, and Lloyd assured me it would pass smog.

i run the 306 and it's streetable imho ... i love it , makes power all the way to the top till the limiter comes in 6750 on the stock bottom end .. i need a reason for a fully forged block :metal:

My formula has about 165K on it now, and thats another factor i'm really trying to place in my decision as well. I want something really mild, but will still give me some power gains. It would be great if I decide to do something over the winter, but if I dont get around to it, I think i'm just going to plan on swapping in a lower milage LT1 into there and going from that. My engine has absolutely no problems, and still runs great. Most of the 165K miles was highway driven (a lady owned it, original owner too, up until 150K and drove it to work almost everyday which was pretty far away on the highway). I'm kinda leaning towards the LT4 cam right now, but as always, I'm still keeping my eyes and ears open until I make the purchase.
