Ouch.
Insurance?
The last set of pics I saw with that story involved an import and a bottle heater they said had stayed on. The trunk was hanging 1/2 way through the garage door.
I need to send that to a friend who was talking about mounting the bottle between the seats of his reg cab truck :D

What happened with the blow off valve? I know something like that can happen. Butr the bottles are rated at 3000 PSI and the blow off is ment to go at 1800PSI. The heater must of been left on and the blow valve didn't work.

The damage from that is absolutely AMAZING! Sucks.

That doesnt happen to a normal bottle, even a bottle in direct sunlight wont do that

I think the guesstimation is that the heater was left on.

Did you see how the rear quarter panel got pushed in? That wasn't caused by the bottle just ..........

LOL, don't be scared of it. It's alot of fun and safer than what alot of people think. That's given that things are done right.
Gomer Pyle over on that forum decided it'd be a good idea to put a bottle out of a FIRE RECOVERY car into his. That bonehead thought it wouldn't have any problems.
Metal fatigue anyone?

Yup, if for some reason I decided to have nitrous in my car, I sure wouldn't leave the bottle in it.

Pressure relief valve
Blowdown tube
Don't torch the bottle
These all help.
There's usually a reason something like this happens. Possibly someone isn't telling the whole story.

i would like to know the real story behind what happened. i have been around nitrous since the early 90s and in the pro ranks running 2-3 bootles and huge shots and never had any problems even close to that. the pressure relief valve is ment to save your ass and i have ahd a few go off.
the blow down tubes just vent the gas out side, it doesn't do anymore than that. many cars don't even need them if the bottle is mounted in an actual trunk.

The bottle had been exposed to extrem temperature in a vehicle fire...the owner of the TA had bought the bottle used

Thats y im scared of the stuff. I know with it being hooked up right and used properly that its save but it still can happen.
MeanGreen94Z
12-26-2008, 03:59 AM
technically that will never happen if your not stupid. go messing with the heat and burst disc and it will. BUT like said. if used properly, its safe
EDIT! i can still see paul walker and vin diesel jumping for cover behind a tree screaming "NAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZ!!!"

Exactly why using a propane torch to get bottle pressure is a bad idea. When used properly, that should never happen. Ive seen many blow off valves pop but nothing like this.

I'm calling BS, at least partially.
They said it was a "Mint" car before this, so it dented the 1/4 panel and unscrewed the gas cap? LoL
I'm thinking all that damage wasn't solely done by a bottle "exploding", I've seen bottles left out in the sun and none of them blew up, I don't know just seems a tad off to me.

yeah because if i ever have a dent in my 1/4 panel and a screwed up gas cap im gonna set off a nitrous bottle in my car to fix them. the pressure blew te hatch open and pushed the 1/4's out causing the dents lol thats where the bent out

01-22-2009, 01:33 PM
i guess we're the only two that could see that, I noticed that when I first looked at the pictures and could see that was why the panel were bent, well, creased actually because the back ends by the taillights were spread apart, which on the driver's side when the panel spread, it pulled off the gas cap, look closely at it all again and you will see what I'm talking about.

They left the bottle in the car on the hottest day intentionally so they could get the insurance to tota the car or something?

I dunno but that sucks either way.. I don't think insurance would cover that anyhow would they?

just for some clarification (other on here did try)
Pressure relief valve (prv), this is made to release in case bottle pressures get high but before bottle failure. discs are available in different ratings but NHRA specs 2500psi iirc.
Blow down tube: this is merely a "hose", be it metal or rubber, that hooks to the prv that allows the n2o to vent outside the car if the prv pops. this is also an nhra requirement if the bottle is not mounted in a trunk, ie: hatch cars must have a blow down tube. this lets you see since the cloud that would be in your car would make that very difficult.

I like how that one guy said....
"wow, looks like the nitrous tried to steal your stereo too..."
And that the Insurance paid it off....wow. I personally would like that Insurance guys number becuase, even with what I pay every six months for our 6 cars and the good record we have, there's no way on God's green Earth my guy would cover some crap like that.
No way at all.....
They probably are up to some fraudulent activity on this one. No doubt the Nitrous did some major damage here but there is another side to the story.
Fo to the Show,
Ivan
