View Full Version : why so much hate on the C4 Vette's????

why does it seem like everyone hates the C4 Vette's. i mean it's not like they were dogs or anything, an LT1 Vette was faster than a 911 or Ferrari (until the 355 at least) of the same year. plus they still look good.:)

I dunno, seems like if you see a crappy Vette it's a C4 and they also seem like the most affordable... but I love them especially on into the 90s. Don't often see ones that are really taken care of though, so that might contribute to the hate. My brother's '91 has insane handling and suspension -- it could lap my car on a curvy road :face_shocked:

ya, stock vs stock they were a pretty good match for a C5Z in the twisties.

Every one that I see is beat pretty much, usually not modded at all and just crap.
Thats where the hate around here comes from. Ive seen a few nice ones though, just few and far between (around here anyways). The reason they are all beat could also be that fact that every road in MA sucks.

I cant stand the way you have to step down into it. I feel like im getting into a coffin. Nothing performance wise sucks aslong as its an LT car...no no TPI.

They can be, and when you do something to em' they arent too bad.
Its just nobody ever does, all I see is kids beating the crap out of em and putting stickers on em' :D
....Or the occasional old guy thats had it since new ;)
We DO have a few VERY nice C4s here though.

Its just the sign of the times!
The same exact thing happened to the 3rd gen when the Lt1 4th gen came out, the appreciation dies...Some love them and others just moved on.....
As far as the C4 goes i like the 91 TPI vette the front and rear covers look way more modern,PITA to get in and out of though... the C5 took alot of getting used to due to the rear cover great power increase, much easier to get in and out...C6 well hats off to the caddy engineer that made that car a bad mofo!!!! especially the Zo6 and Zr1
The video shown is cool however, the GTO is a 5.7L 6spd and those are not fast by any means(stock) so showing a much lighter 5.7 vette Lt1 does not help the rep at all but hey its a sign of the times....
I love L98s,Lt1s and Ls series none have let me down against the competition!

the LS1 GTO stock is still trapping 105-106mph. in theory, (using the old LS1 has better top end idea) the GTO should have just kept on walking away from the Vette as the speeds went up, but the Vette stayed with it.

I'll take a LT1/LT4 C4 any day of the week. Hell, give me a TPI C4 from 1991 in that steel blue metallic and I'd take it too.

I don't have them. Obviously I'd rather have my SS than one, or else I'd have one. I'm not a huge fan of the interior and I'd probably have to have a moderately clean LT1 on ZR1's. Not a huge fan of the ol' TPI.

Why do people hate on the C4 Vette? My theory is that people hate on it because it is too old to be new, but too new to be 'classic'. At this point in time, it is in the same position that ALOT of the now expensive cars from the late 60s and early 70s were back in the 80s. I mean, you could pick up a 1969 Camaro in decent condition for a song back in, say, 1988. But look what they go for now.

I've always liked the C4s, I've had 3 of them (84,85 & currently a 93) They have pretty much bottomed out price wise and you can get a decent L98 C4 for $5-6K, LT1 for $6-7K . I like the feeling of stepping down into the car, kinda makes it feel more like a race car, as it wraps itself around you . The L98 cars aren't that bad, although it seems like they hit a wall around 100 mph. The C6 crowd will soon be making fun of the C5ers as the price of those has started to get near the $10K range. I think the reason some of these cars have become ratted out is cuz some people buy the car cheap for $4-5 and once something breaks on it , realize now that they have to pay the dreaded "corvette tax" and start to see they can't afford to fix it. . There are a ton of C4's that are ratted out on Craigslist.

To me C4s are some of the best looking Vettes, I was born in '84 so when I think Corvette I think C4s. I remember Emilio Estevez driving one in mighty ducks 1 and I also remember Steve on 90210 drove a C4 convertible. Lot of these perception on cars are some what dated, because C5s are becoming the new C4s. 4th gens are the new third gen, ls1 f-cars are similar to what the 5.0s were in the late 90s.

Ive always been a sucker for the C4 Grandsport. My biggest gripe with the C4 though is the interior, specifically the gauges.

down here in cape girardeau every hick has one and puts shit like checkered stripes on the hood and everything. kind of gives them a bad name. about the same as with lt1 fbodies... some people just get a hold of these cars and ruin them.

I personally like C4s. I usually dont see them modded much except when old guys put outlandish body kits and paint jobs on them. Id love to see an LE or AI topped 383 C4 cruising around.
^^^ I'll be doing that in a couple of years^^^

Thatll be sick man, my dad has had 3 C4 corvettes, one aqua teal color with tan leather, one red hard top and one teal with black leather, they were all 90 or 91's I believe.
Thats sweet man, I love C4 corvettes, mine is red with tan interior

Man that is a beautiful corvette, like you said, most people don't know what these cars can do. I was the same, when I bought mine I expected it to be quite a bit slower than my old 98 Z28 I sold for it, but luckily they are about as fast, but the C4 handles much better, and is way more unique. On a side note, It looks like your rear suspension is cambered out, Did it help with handling?

Ive always liked these LT1 c4 vettes. LT1 VETTE your car is absolutly beautiful.
Dont get me wrong I would much rather have a c6 but for the money you cant beat a great handling platform like this set up with our beloved LT1 motor. Ill have one some day ;)
Thanks. :D
The suspension's alignment is set-up via the specs on VBP's website. The car handles amazing, but it's dialed in more for performance than "extended tire ware". It's a trade-off but one I'm willing to make. So far, after 5000km, there doesn't appear to be any adverse tire wear front or back so I'm happy about that. :D
Cool man

that black vett is pretty cool.
im not a huge fan of the c4 though. i had an 85 and ill tell you what ill be damned if there wasnt something breaking on the thing every week. the l98 was a nice motor for its time but by the time i got the car it was kinda dated. i usually dont get hung up on build quality but ill tell ya mine had really crappy build quality. ill tell you what though mine handled like you wouldn't believe. after i sold the car to a kid i work with he told me it had the z51 package. i didnt even know that was an option back then.
i sold it to invest the money into my 69 corvette. i miss the car but glade i sold it. Loved driving it but i wasn't big on the looks and it was money pit.

I gotta tell you, I always wanted to find a nice cheap Cross fire (1984) vette, and drop a big block in it, with an updated front end and rear end, and a Grandsport Paintjob....

i wonder how a big block would fit in there. my 85 had a very very tight engine bay. i not hugly familiar with big blocks but how much wider and taller are they
popo8
08-03-2010, 03:30 PM
ALOT bigger, but if there is one thing I learned hanging/working at a performance shop is that ANYTHING can fit ANYWHERE, with some creative engineering....

I love my grandpas 94 convertible. Only thing I would change would be a sixspeed swap. I was always told I would be the one to inherit it (hopefully not for a very very long time) but now hes trying to sell it.
stock with 80,000 grandpa miles. Always garaged, interior like new and if the paint was detailed and a new top put on it would look like a showroom car.
And IMO, C4s look best with the top down. I dont like the hardtops.
