I was just wondering what everyone elses thoughts are on Long tubes Vs. Short tubes. I'm running short tubes with a stainless works 3inch catless y pipe that has a cut out at the end of it. Do you think I would gain anything buy going to long tubes? To justify spending the extra cash?

All I hear about is how worthless shorties are. I've never really heard of anyone getting any gains out of them. But, alas, this is just hearsay as I've never put them on my car.

Sorry I wasn't more helpful

I would not say shorty/mid tubes are useless depending on most bolt ons they can be more benificial keeping TQ in the lower RPM range. There have been MANY cam/heads cars with MAC mids that run VERY hard!!!!!! Ultimately the best set up to make max HP will definately benifit from longtubes since they move the power up in the RPM level.

I recently went from shortys to LT's. I doubt anyone else in this thread has also had both sets of headers on their car.

Is there a performance increase? Sure. Is it noticeable? Maybe a little.. not much. Is it worth it? Depends on your goals. Bolt-on's only? Probably not. If you plan on doing more (moderate cam, bigger engine, boost/n2o, etc.) then yeah it probably is. Also depends on what you're looking on spending. You can put a set of long tubes on for $300-400 or you can spend $700+ for on just long tubes alone. Do you have 1" header bolts? How old are your o2 sensors? Do you plan on reusing them? If so, have you tried getting them out? I ended up damaging the threads on the one I removed and had to use a fair bit of heat.

Up to you, assuming I end up keeping the car after I graduate next May, I'll be building up the motor, I did the headers as a supporting mod for the future assuming I end up keeping it. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.

You're grouping shorties and mids together....

They are far from the same thing. A 1 3/4 mid tube header will flow way more than a 1 5/8 shorty.

I love my as&m midsand won't be changing them for links any time soon.

Yes they are different but still the same relative performance.
SLP "shorties" work very nice due to the big tubes
Hooker shorties work nicely roughly the same performance
Mac mids are very nice

I have had all the above and cannot complain about the performance.

I have shorties on my car and actually like them better than my old pacesetter longtubes. Changing plugs is 10x easier with my big man paws and I like the ground clearence. If I were building a racecar and needed that extra mile an hour and two tenths or whatever then I'd switch but I'm sticking with what I've got for a streetcar.

okay well that gives me alot to think about thanks for all of the input. For now im just running minor bolt-ons and sprayin it. In the future hopefully I could build a engine. So i guess for now ill just stick with the SLP shortys Ive just had a bunch of people telling me Im losing alot without the LT's.

Well im not running any o2 sensors I used the fakers and brian (PCM4less) tuned the the car so it wont trigger the SES light. we only have visual emissions in Butler,Pa. I believe the header bolts are 1" I can remember it been a couple of years since install.

I have the opposite problem I got the Burger King hand's lol can barely hold a whopper!!! And plugs are still a bitch to do.
