View Full Version : Flowmaster drone is too much

My old cars sounded great with flowmaster catbacks, and I still love the sound of my car now. But the drone is horrible. I'm talking about worse than my old firebird that had dumped 1 chambers.
Car has a hotcam and shorty headers.
The options I'm thinking about are these.
A-Install my old spiralflow into the ipipe hoping to lower the inside resonance
B-replace the flowmaster with a hooker muffler
C-buy a gmmg off local forums
Guys with cammed cars and hooker or gmmg, how is the drone? How loud at idle and how raspy up top?
I don't like magnaflow so it's not an option.
Exhaust drone with a full system!? Maybe it's been too long since I've had it running out of the back of the car.
My dumped bullet that hangs off my y-pipe doesnt even drone. But cars can be cars. Sorry I can't help :hmm:

I have a hooker and a magnaflow. The hooker you can not hear it in the car with someone no problem talking/music but there is enough drone on the phone that I cant hear anyone/vice versa. I have to pull over to make a call. It is horriblly raspy as well. I dont care for it at all went magnaflow. Magnaflow no rasp <3 Still have some trouble on the phone but I may just be crazy
Back in the day I had a magnaflow catback on my car and all I can remember about it was I loved the sound of the exhaust running through the headers (when I could hear the pipes ringing lol) but other then that the exhaust was super quiet. That was LT/3" ORY with the catback and tips.

i mean, i dont have a cam, but i do have headers, and i'm running an ultra flow ss dynomax. i don't find it too loud interior wise, sounds really good with no music on. with music, sound is minimal. but still not as bad as flowmaster.

I don't mind loud it's just the deep sound this thing makes at around 2500 rpms which is where I always am at on the highway because my converter doesn't lock.
The gmmg got sold which may not be a horrible thing. I seen a 97 ss the other day with full exhaust and gmmg and I didn't like the rasp it had when he shifted and at high rpms. I think hooker may be too quiet for my taste.
EDIT: I decided to go with a pypes race pro 3 inch in and dual out muffler. These things sound sick. I heard some on a muffstang today and then searched youtube for them and they sound exactly like what Im looking for. Gonna just bolt it in and would like to eventually go with a cme one day like this car.

Decided against GMMG. If I can ever get my ass to summit and get my car put back together Ill get some before and after vids of the Pypes muffler. Also wanna do some back to back to back track runs with the flowmaster, straight pipe, and pypes racepro to see if it makes any difference at all.

I got the pypes racepro put on today. Very deep and mellow at low rpms. Screams at wot. Very low drone and no rasp. My interior doesn't rattle anymore so I'm happy.
If any of y'all are looking for something different than everyone else is running this is a great option.

I'll get a clip later this week. My cameras showing a blank white screen so I'm gonna have to borrow my friends camera. Plus I wanna let the muffler " break in".
