We are speechless, the only way to really turn it off is to put it in gear and hold down the brakes, then it'll die after a few tries.
Doesn't seem to be dieseling, because it's not a mechanical fuel pump.
It seems like the starter is staying engaged. Don't know if you can hear it, but notice the clicking sound when it's running normally, as if the starter is stuck in the flywheel or something.

Yea, it doesn't make one bit of sense though.
It's cold, not even warm, so it couldn't even be possibly dieseling. But why it's doing this is not making one bit of sense.
It does leave a very BAD odor when it does this, horrible sounding.. Musty almost. Not fuel or oil or even antifreeze. Nothing fluid.

Pull the coil wire while it's doing this. I'll bet with no spark it still diesels on.

ever think that maybe the start solenoid went bad and is stuck in the "start" position??? that sounded like the starter was running full tilt. i had the same thing happen on a Cummins N14 shop engine when i was in diesel tech, the solenoid went bad and wouldn't stop cranking.

Oh I unplugged the spark plugs and it kept going.. No fuel either.
It might be the starter, I may check the solenoid tomorrow, have it meet Mr. Breaker Bar.

this happened on my 92 camaro b4c car in a burger king parking lot, had to rip off the battery terminals so it would quit trying to start and towed it home. changed starters didn't help traced wires everything was fine, ended up cutting the purple wire and running a push button switch to it. My starter was junk by the time all this happened so i borrowed my high torque mini start off my formula for it almost destroyed it to and the flywheel.

Will my starter work in his truck? I think the starter has been burnt out.

Most of the starters from manufacturer to manufacturer are the same. Obviously it costs less to equip 10 different models of cars with the same starter, than to have 10 different starters in 10 different cars.
The only ones that seem to be different sometimes are the higher torque diesel starters (sometimes they are the same ones used in the 1500s though).
I would take a look and match part #s or at least see that its setup the same/looks generally the same. You might get lucky with both of them being GMs and in the regular family of motors (V6/V8). Its something Id be careful with though, slight differences can make huge problems when you are forcing a wheel with teeth into a flywheel just a LITTLE bit the wrong way.
