picked up a Mr. Gasket 160 degree thermostat locally as that is the only one they had and am very confused as it says it works for pretty much every year other than 96-97. The part # is 4363 and I was wondering why it would be different for those years? will it work anyway? i'm trying to put it on a 96.

The LT1 t-stat is different than a SBC t-stat, but to the best of my knowledge any LT1 t-stat should interchange fine.
I went with a Hypertech 160* t-stat (Part #1008) on my '94 Z. I've got one laying around for the SS but I've never pulled the one in my SS to see what temp it is, as my car stays plenty cool (fan temps have been tuned to kick on earlier)

it is a 96 camaro ss. Even searching summitracing's online catalog there is an odd exemption of the 96-97

That is very strange....Maybe something to do with the 96-97 having OBDII?
The water pump part# is the same.... I guess the earlier year LT1 thermostat would physically fit...

I have an Autozone 160 degree part #15206 in my 96 with no problems. A normal sbc won't work in and LT1 but I don't see why any of the LT1 tstats wouldn't interchange. Here's a good description of the differences between an sbc vs. LT1 thermostat.http://shbox.com/1/tstat.jpg
