but the other night my car died on me just driving... and when i turned it back on, for the first time ever the seatbelt light has illuminated. at this same time the security light triggered and has been on ever since. additionally, my key wont turn into the lock position. i'm assuming the lock cylinder is messed up . . . but why is the seatbelt light coming on now just for the first time? i didn't even think i had a seatbelt light till now haha.

I've never heard of this before, the security light and lock cylinder might have something to do with the VATS system. The seatbelt light shouldn't have anything to do with the ignition or security system. You might check shbox's site and see how to disable to VATS and see if that fixes your ignition problem. AS for the SB light maybe check the small 2 wire plug and wires in the seatbelt buckle between the seat and console.

I've had the security light turn on sometimes and not allow me to start the car until it went off 10 min later. I believe it has something to do with the chip in the ignition key. Are you still using and original key? Is the chip loose or worn down?

^^^ happened to me 3 years back, have to splice a resistor in one of the wires coming off the lock cylinder. write up is on shbox's site.

My security light is on. Has been for a year now. Car has never had a problem starting, though....

Your car wont die because of a vats issue. I wonder if you ignition switch is messed up. Point in case someone tried to steal my old camaro. f-ed the whole column up. The vats wires were hanging there I held the wires to my key started the car and removed the key.
The rod the goes to the other side of the coulumn might be bent and it could have been just on the verge of being on/off

sounds like that is my issue. thanks for the replies.
i still don't get why the seatbelt light came on... i mean i haven't seen it in 4 years of owning it... i just don't get the reason it would just start coming on when that happened..
